Lincoln Heights' Future is in Tech, the Environment and Historic Preservation

To fully describe Lincoln Heights is to (attempt to) describe the entirety of Los Angeles. There is so much already here – and so much opportunity in the future.

Once considered the Little Italy of LA, this Northeast LA neighborhood has an operating winery, recreational and athletic facilities for residents of all ages, 25 churches and temples, and historic sites that include mansions from a time when some of the wealthiest people in Southern California lived here. More recently, the one-acre Ed P. Reyes River Greenway illustrates how channeling storm water over a falls and under a bridge provides aesthetic and ecological value to the area. The Brewery Art Colony hosts a biannual art walk, while the former Lincoln Heights Jail is being renovated as a tech hub and climbing wall fitness facility. The Historic Preservation Zone features 19th century Queen Anne-style gems, but Craftsman, mid-century and 21st century homes are scattered throughout.

The median price (2013) of detached houses – which constitute about 43% of all dwellings in Lincoln Heights – is $293,000 and rising; townhomes and condominiums, constituting 11% of dwellings, have a median price of $247,000. Multi-unit buildings sell for between $1 million and $3 million, while single-family homes at the high end list around $600,000. Un-built lots sell for as little as $25,000.

Situated within the Los Angeles Unified School District, children attend Abraham Lincoln High School (including the LEMA school – Leadership Entertainment Media Arts – within it), the Florence Nightingale Middle School and six elementary schools. Alternatively, there are several private, charter and parochial schools in Lincoln Heights, including the Los Angeles Leadership Academy.
