Flat roofs, flowing spaces and lots of glass – popular in NELA in the past, fantastic today.
We remember them from the TV shows – The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched and Make Room for Daddy – of the 1960s and 1970s: the Mid-Century Modern homes. It’s a style that was popular all over the world, and you can’t drive too far around Northeast Los Angeles (NELA) without running into some real MiMo gems.
And no wonder: the Mid-Century Modern aesthetic fits right in with the California climate. Big glass windows often run floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall. Copious amounts of wood and stone, inside and out, create a blend of nature that traces back to the fundamental principles of Frank Lloyd Wright. Open floor plans that dispense with doors and walls allow inhabitants to flow like a breeze between kitchens, dining areas, living rooms, dens and foyers.
But unlike the Arts & Crafts style of interiors that are found in FLW homes, MiMo interiors are just as sleek as their exterior. Tulip chairs, Eames Lounges, Danish Modern suites, Noguchi coffee tables and abstract art all found a home in these modern, clean spaces. The television show “Mad Men” captures the era as expressed in Manhattan highrises, but take a short drive through Pasadena, South Pasadena, Lincoln Heights, Mt. Washington, Eagle Rock and Altadena to find the style expressed in single family homes on hillsides and flatlands.
Many now lovingly renovated, Mid-Century Modern homes (which can include some of über cool split levels) have flat or slightly pitched roofs that adapt well to solar collectors. Most are single-level homes, and some illustrate the increasing mobility of the age – the mid-1930s through the mid-1960s – with swanky carports.
Mid-Century Modern homes in NELA stand out quite easily from the Craftsman, Spanish Revival, Tudor, Victorian and Bungalow-style homes that otherwise populate the area (vive la différence!).
